{ Book Review } : Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

Hello everyone! I’m back today with another book review and I’m going to be review Three Dark Crows by Kendare Blake. This is a fairly new release and I actually really enjoyed it 🙂 I’m excited to be talking about this novel with you all so without further ado, let’s get started with the review!
Release date : 20 September 2016
Published by : HarperTeen
Synopsis :
Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.
But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.
If only it was that simple. Katharine is unable to tolerate the weakest poison, and Arsinoe, no matter how hard she tries, can’t make even a weed grow. The two queens have been shamefully faking their powers, taking care to keep each other, the island, and their powerful sister Mirabella none the wiser. But with alliances being formed, betrayals taking shape, and ruthless revenge haunting the queens’ every move, one thing is certain: the last queen standing might not be the strongest…but she may be the darkest.

“Three dark queens
Are born in a glen,
Sweet little triplets
Will never be friends

Three dark sisters
All fair to be seen,
Two to devour
And one to be Queen”

Going into Three Dark Crowns, I was pretty hesitant and didn’t have super high expectations because I’ve seen a couple of mixed reviews but I actually really enjoyed it!Three Dark Crowns follows the story of three sisters who have been separated since birth and when they turn sixteen, they come together and fight to the death for the crown. We have Mirabella, who possess the power to control fire or vicious storms, Arsinoe, who is a naturalist and Katherine, who is a poisoner.
This was a very solid fantasy novel and from the start, it kept me interested and kept me wanting to continue reading. It is also a darker YA fantasy novel, which I always love, and the author definitely excuted the story very well! As this is my first Kendare Blake novel, I wasn’t sure what her writing style would be like but I really loved it. One issue I had with this book was that there were too many characters thrown in at the start of the novel and it took me awhile to finally figure out who each of the characters are and what role they play in the novel.
As for the characters, it was really interesting to see all the different perspectives from the three sisters and some of the side characters. My favourite sister out of the three is Katherine because she was really interesting from the start and I personally feel she stood out amongst her other two characters. Another character I liked was Jules, who is a side character!
There was also some romance in the novel but I didn’t enjoy any of the romance. It just fell flat for me and I felt that some of the couples had no chemistry with each other whatsoever.
Overall,  I would highly recommend Three Dark Crowns if you’re looking for a darker YA fantasy novel or if you’re fan of Kendare Blake’s novels! I will be picking up the sequel when it’s out and I can’t wait to see how the story continues. Do also let me know if you’ve read this book and what you thought of it 🙂 Thank you for reading and I’ll see you in my next post, bye!

  1. I can’t wait to read this, it sounds amazing! Your review has just made me want it even more 🙂
And can I just give a little bit of constructive criticism? Your font is really small, which makes it a bit difficult for people like me to read on a phone. It’d be great if you could make it a bit bigger 🙂
