{ Book Review } – Vicious by V.E Schwab

Hey everyone, hope you all are doing well! For today’s blogpost, I am going to be reviewing Vicious by V.E Schwab. I know I’m pretty late to reading this novel considering it was published 3 years ago, but OMG this book is literally one of the best books I’ve read in 2016 ❤
Vicious is V.E Schwab’s standalone fantasy novel about these two friends who started doing experiments and try to become ExtraOrdinary’s, who are people with special abilities. Overall, this book was just fantastic and everyone NEEDS to go pick this book up. Hope that you’ll enjoy this review! 🙂
Release Date : 2 September 2013
Published By : Tor Books
Genres : Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, Science Fiction, Paranormal
Synopsis : Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong. Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

Moving on to my review,

Plot :
I really really really enjoyed the plot of the story! The whole book gave off X-Men vibes because ExtraOrdinary people are very similar to mutants, as they both have special abilities. I also really enjoyed the writing style of the author and the way she ” arranged ” the story. The layout of the novel is that we have the backstory and what is happening in the present back to back, which I personally found the story easier to understand what going on.
Overall, the plot was just full of action and we also get to learn the science behind the experiments and it’s seriously so interesting 🙂
World-Building :
The world building was amazing! There wasn’t much world building in my opinion but nonetheless, the author is still so descriptive when talking about some of the different places and even though the book is kind of dark, the world that it takes place in is still so magical.
Characters :
Firstly, we have Victor and Eli who are good friends in college. Victor is an anti-hero in the novel and he is portrayed as a madman at times, but I just really enjoyed reading about him and he reminds me of Kelsier from The Final Empire and Kaz from Six Of Crows!! ❤
Eli is our villain in the novel and I think that the author did a great job in creating him to be such a great villain. I love both Victor and Eli’s personalities and it was really interesting seeing the sequence of events from when they were friends to when they begin to dislike each other.
We also have our other characters, Sydney, Mitch and Serena. Sydney and Mitch are the people who are working alongside Victor and Sydney herself is an ExtraOrdinary. I loved seeing them work together with Victor and I love how they’re willing to just sacrifice what they have and even themselves to help Victor. I also loved reading about their backstories and how Victor got to know them. Serena is Sydney’s sister and Eli’s sidekick, and I personally feel that she went through the most character development ( which I won’t mentioned because this is a spoiler-free review ). I did hate her at times but ultimately, she was still a really good character 🙂
That is the end of the review and I hope you all enjoyed it! Do pick this book up if the plot interests you and also if you’ve read the book, let me know whether you liked it or not and we can talk about it in the comments. Have a great week and see you in my next post 🙂
